If you had to sketch out an example of a quintessential Dutch-style Galle Fort villa you might not go too far from this one - classical columns at the entrance, large, high-ceilinged drawing and reception rooms at the front of the house opening through to a well-sized courtyard (quite uniquely for Galle Fort with a swimming pool in this case) with junior bedrooms running the length of it and a master bedroom more privately positioned on the first floor.

From that master bedroom, and also accessed from the far end of the courtyard, you have a neat sun terrace - with ‘Ambalama’ for shade - that looks out over clay-tiled roofs with glimpses of the rampart walls and ocean beyond.

Parts of this house date back to the mid-1600s and if time and occupancy can infuse character and charm then you feel it here for sure. You might see bigger homes in the Fort but this one trumps on personality and a real, rich sense of history.

For the right buyer the position is second-to-none too. At the top end of Pedlar’s Street you’re a stone’s throw from the Ramparts and very easily accessed with ample parking along Rampart Street itself. Anyone considering a commercial angle for the property would struggle to find a better spot.

While other newly popular locations emerge on the South Coast, Galle Fort continues, with good reason, to be a hub both for short-term visitors and for those wanting a unique home within touching distance of beaches, restaurants and bars. No other Sri Lankan location (and you’d probably include Colombo in this) can offer the variety that Galle Fort does.
Classic hotels like Amangalla and the Galle Fort Hotel attract a well-heeled crowd. Newer entrants like The Charleston and The Fort Bazaar give a more contemporary, slightly funkier take.
This rich collection of hotels, restaurants and bars gives a lifestyle option unlike any you’d find elsewhere in Sri Lanka.
In terms of access, the villa is ideally placed for coming and going via Rampart Street. Not all villas in the Fort can say the same.

Once out of the Fort the Southern Expressway is a 10-15 minute drive.
